Hieronymus Bosch Model

Bosch hurdygurdy   Hieronymus Bosch (1450 - 1516) painted this design in several of his works, the most notable being the large tryptich " The Garden of Earthly Delights ". This is at present in the Museo del Prada, Madrid.

There are no surviving instruments of this type, but the painting is sufficiently detailed that an accurate copy can be built.

An instrument built strictly to the painted design will have several limitations for the standard repertoire because the original seems to be diatonic over one octave. To overcome this limitation, a standard 23 key arrangement is incorporated. A standard handle is fitted as the original would be unsuitable for accurate " Trompette " articulation.

The Bosch Model is usually built from Sycamore but Mahogany or Walnut can be used.

This is the most compact Hurdy Gurdy that I make and has the smallest wheel. This tends to make a reasonable tone easier to achieve and together with its restrained volume results in an ideal first instrument or for accompanying the quieter early instruments.

Subject to availability, it is also possible to hire this  model.( Currently £ 500.00 returnable deposit and£ 40.00 per month - maximum 3 months.)
